SANITIZING AND DISINFECTING IN THE HOME DURING A PANDEMIC

Well, it’s appropriate to say that our world as we know it, has been compromised. There is a lot of chaos and craziness going on as well. I can, however, offer a consolation of peace and stability for our homes. The truth is, WE DECIDE what our environment will be like. I know that I make a conscious effort every day to ‘embrace the beauty in the chaos’. The beauty being, that we are quarantined in our own homes and all the while,  there are many ways we can still thrive. My goal is to show you how a sanitizing-cleaning regimen can be very successful for your family, especially in this pandemic.

A NEW WAY OF CLEANING

It’s SUPER imperative that you are aware of ‘the flow’ of your household. What does your husband and/or kids do when the first come home from work or school. Where do their shoes usually end up? Where do their clothes go? Are your family members rushing to the fridge to find food? All of these questions are VERY important, especially during a time like this.

HERE’S THE GUIDE

SHOES

There’s no better time than now to adopt a new tradition of ensuring that everyone removes their shoes before entering the rest of the house. If your mudroom is in the front of the house, PERFECT. If your mudroom isn’t-make sure everyone is going in through the mudroom (if feasible) and removing their shoes! It’s an absolute must. There are so many creepy germs at the bottom of our shoes that we don’t want to end up anywhere in the home….and well, because, that’s nasty!  You can organize the shoes in a basket so there are not shoes everywhere or even Amazon has really great huge wicker baskets to flow with a casual home aesthetic. Depending on whether you have an essential worker in your household-I would advise to have a laundry basket in the mudroom and have that be were you remove your outer garments ‘that have been exposed to the world’. 😊

Put towels there if needed for privacy! No need to worry about flashing family members, haha! There are several fold-able, laundry baskets that can also be thrown in the wash as a whole from Amazon-Check out their prices: Hosroome Laundry Hampers with Lids Laundry Baskets with Handles Waterproof and Mildewproof Foldable Hamper Easily Transport Laundry,Grey

HANDWASHING AND DISINFECTANTS

If you have to make a sign to remind your family members-do it. After they have completed the aforementioned they absolutely have to wash their hands. As a matter of fact, hand washing should be done several times a day, as needed, WITH SOAP for 20 seconds at a time. I recommend using “ Safe Guards’ Liquid Hand Soap”-Safeguard Liquid Hand Soap, Washes Away Bacteria, Micellar Deep Cleansing, Fresh Clean Scent, 25 Oz (Pack of 4)  It’s a deep micellar cleansing soap and specifically for bacteria. It’s awesome. I’m sure there are some out there that kill viruses as well!

TRAVEL SIZE SANTIZERS:

If you travel quite often, just keep a Lysol-type spray in your car. I like the “Suave Hand Sanitizer spray”-Suave Hand Sanitizer Alcohol Based Kills 99.9% of Germs 10 oz,Pack of 6 It says it kills 99.9% of germs. I also use it for when we order take-out to spray anything that I feel needs sanitizing. Use it for spraying your groceries before putting them away as well!

Of course always have a hand sanitizer that’s alcohol based with you. I have one in my purse, in the car etc. This is, in the event that you can’t physically wash your hands.

Just by having this small system will help later when we dive into the appropriate cleaning regimen.

Now Let’s Get into Cleaning The Home On A Regular Basis

Make it a daily routine to clean your countertops and floors at the end of the day and before (pertaining to cooking) and after use. I’ll elaborate:

Use either a store-bought sanitizing mixture or you can even create your own! Always clean with a microfiber towel and hot water.

Lysol wipes also come very handy in keeping up with the home and ensuring that surfaces and fixtures are cleaned on a constant basis. Sam’s Club offers a 4-pack-bundle that I love, and even, Amazon has plenty of options.

In the mornings when you’re getting your coffee, wipe your counters down with the wipes, toss it, and wash your hands. After you brush your teeth, wipe the bathroom counter down, toss it and wash your hands. After you use the toilet, wipe the toilet seat down, the cover and the front and side of the toilet. Toss it and wash your lovely hands. Get it? It really works-I promise!

In the evenings, you can do a run-through all over the home, wiping the counter tops with their respective microfiber cloths. Put all the microfiber clothes in a bowl and pull them out as you move to different areas of the home cleaning counters. Wipe down coffee tables, kitchen counters, nightstands, the dining/kitchen tables, and all counters… but do your bathroom counters LAST and with separate microfiber cloths for each respective bathroom. After, all micro-fiber’s clothes should go right into the wash and use a cap-full of vinegar. 🙂 Here’s where you can buy some microfiber cloths for under $10: AIDEA Microfiber Cleaning Cloths Softer Highly Absorbent, Lint Free Streak Free for House, Kitchen, Car, Window Gifts(12in.x16in.)—8PK

The idea is, even if you have to skip an evening due to….just life happening…if you make it a habit to clean at least the counter-area you’re at when you use it… JUST IMAGINE how clean your counters will stay PROPERLY SANITIZED AND DISINFECTED. 😊

FLOORS

I recommend using the vacuum first for heavy dirt-attracting areas. I have toddlers so you can imagine-haha! After dinner, make it a habit to go around your house with a microfiber mop and Lysol in a spray bottle- (remember you can make your own disinfectant spray and even add essential oils in it).

I have a farmhouse-literally, and I love adding peppermint oil in my spray bottles. The smell is glorious! There are so many benefits to using essential oils. I have more great recommendations if you need some too, message me!

Reeling it back in… 🙂

For starters always buy 3 Micro fiber mop-heads (Synonymous Dual Microfiber Flip Mop Refill for 18 inch Chenille Microfiber Wet Mop Pad & 18 inch Dust Mop Head Replacement (2 Pads, Cedar Action), because cross-contamination is a real thing. We want to make sure that the bathrooms are mopped separately and the mudroom is mopped separately. VERY IMPORTANT! Traffic comes in from the mudroom so make sure you are absolutely using a separate mop-head for this area.

SHOWER

Make it a new habit for every family member (old enough and able) in your household, before they take a shower to clean the shower and disinfect and shower fixtures. Great advice I promise! I use- Lysol’s Power Bathroom Soapy and Scum remover because, again, it says it kills 99.9% of viruses AND bacteria! You can go organic if you choose, but just make sure that the composition you use is actually effective enough to kill germs. WE DON’T WANT ANY GERMS! 🙂

LAUNDRY

Washing clothes is something that you can complete daily by item type (darks, lights, colors, linens towels, etc.) or weekly (your choice) but try to get it completed at the minimum-weekly. Also, do you have a sanitize option on your washer and/or dryer… if so, use it! Since we are in a pandemic, please make sure that even if you have a high-efficiency washer try to use the ‘Affresh tablets’ at least once every two weeks. Affresh W10501250 Washing Machine Cleaner, 6 Tablets: Cleans Front Load and Top Load Washers, Including HE This will ensure that dirt and grime in the washer parts are effectively cleaned. Thank me later!

This a your starter guide…. How do you feel…?

Remember your home is your palace and we want to keep it clean but also sanitized in a time like this. Feel free to ask me any questions and remember, “ Home is where the heart is, and not where we want germs to be”.

  1. Hello Ayola,

I appreciate the effort made to put all the information in a great article. Good job. What I know for sure is that this quarantine period has transformed people’s minds. Many of them have become maniacs of disinfection and cleaning, not because it is a natural part of their lifestyle, but because of fear, and because they are told to do so.

We learn the basic rules of hygiene from childhood, and once we develop as adults, we become much more aware and naturally of their benefits. As long as we respect them without overdoing them, we will be protected.

Thank you for sharing the article, for sure I will come back for new updates. One topic that interests me personally, and I think would interest many of the website’s readers, is disinfecting the sleeping mattress. Can you recommend something for this topic? I will appreciate.

  2. Sanitizing has been the talk of the year since the Covid-19 pandemic became so serious all over the world. This whole Covid-19 situation really brought awareness of the fact that we need to keep clean by sanitizing and disinfecting. This also applies to the home. Thanks for this guide on sanitizing and disinfecting the home.
